Application for international protection or asylum application means a request made by a third-country national or a stateless person for protection from a Member State, which can be understood as an application for refugee status or subsidiary protection status, and which does not explicitly request another kind of protection outside the scope of Directive 2011/95/EU, which can be applied for separately.
Asylum statistics collect data on the number of asylum seekers and not on the number of applications. This is based on the fact that every adult person with legal capacity has the right to apply for international protection on their own behalf or on behalf of their family members.
