Glossary:Digital Intensity Index (DII)

Print this page

The digital intensity index (DII) is a composite indicator, derived from the EU survey on ICT usage and e-commerce in enterprises. The indicator is calculated based on 12 variables, with each of the variables having a score of 1 point. The DII distinguishes 4 levels of digital intensity for each enterprise:

  • 0-3 points: very low
  • 4-6 points: low
  • 7-9 points: high
  • 10-12 points: very high

The indicator measures the use of different technologies by enterprise and is useful to describe the extent to which EU enterprises are digitalised.
