The median is the middle value in a group of numbers ranked in order of size.

The median is that value of the variate which divides the total frequency into two halves. In other words, it is the number in a range of scores that falls exactly in the middle so that 50% of the scores are above and 50% are below.

For example, to find the median of three numbers, 4, 2 and 8:

  • put them in ascending order, i.e. 2, 4 and 8;
  • the middle number is 4: the median is 4.
