Highlights

The primary objective of this subchapter is to produce a comprehensive and accessible glossary of variable definitions used within city statistics. This glossary is designed to ensure a clear understanding and interpretation of data disseminated by Eurostat, thereby improving the clarity of data requirements for the providers of these statistics in national statistical offices, while supporting the standardisation of statistical concepts across Europe.

This subchapter forms part of Eurostat’s City statistics manual.

Introduction

To provide an easily accessible source of statistical concepts, the variables are organised according to statistical themes/categories, broadly in line with those used on Eurostat’s website and its online database. The definitions and breakdowns of the variables for city statistics are aligned (where applicable) with EU legislation.

The information presented in the chapters that follow specifically address the variables identified for the 2023–25 data collection exercise, in total, some 144 variables. Table 2 classifies these variables by statistical theme.

Links are provided to associated documents, including legislation, methodologies and information stored on the EU’s CIRCABC library within the Regional and Urban Statistics Interest Group [1].

It‘s important to note that this glossary is a dynamic document, updated as and when needed to integrate new variables/indicators in response to evolving policy needs. Feedback and comments from users are highly valued and can be transmitted to estat-urban-audit@ec.europa.eu.
